Four Cotswold students make GB teams

Floorball Club, run by Mrs Honour in our PE department, is hugely popular at The Cotswold School! It is a mixed club for all year groups and its success is shown in the selection of players by national teams.

Selection by Great Britain

Lex (Year 12), Kyle (Year 12), and Dylan (Year 11) have been chosen to represent Great Britain in the Prague Games in July; while Megan (Year 13) is in the GB ladies’ squad.

Over half of the 40 U13 and U16 players at local club Cotswold Floorball – also run by Mrs Honour – are students at The Cotswold School. Megan now coaches younger players at the club. At the National Floorball Finals in June, Cotswold Floorball boys were runners-up in a hotly contested series.

Inspiring the next generation

Mrs Honour said,They are amazing role models. All of the younger students look up to them, I doubt I will ever have a time when I have four GB representatives at The Cotswold School but I hope it will inspire the next generation coming through.

“All of them have been attending my Friday after-school club and have trained and played with Cotswold Floorball since they were in Year 7 – in fact, Megan has been playing since she was in Year 2. They are all fantastic students and a credit to the school – and I’m the luckiest coach in the world.”

How were Lex, Kyle and Dylan selected for the GB team?

“We started by attending monthly open sessions in Bracknell. These sessions were six hours each and consisted of a series of drills, followed by gameplay against other players’ trialling. This led to a friendly match against a local men’s team, which was a good challenge and turned out to be a close game.

The coaches then made the training invitation-only and selected a squad to attend those sessions as well as the Prague Games in the Czech Republic, 13th to 16th July.

Lex explains the status of floorball in Europe:

“The Prague Games is described as ‘the biggest international floorball tournament for the youth’. Floorball is a much more popular sport in Eastern Europe and Scandinavian countries so this will be great experience of what one of the highest levels of floorball is like.

“This will also lead to a further selection, for a team to participate in the Men’s U19 European qualifiers in September 2022, and for the World Championship in 2023 in Frederikshavn, Denmark.”
