Year 12 Art and Design: Textiles

Topic: “Environment”

Year Group: Year 12

Focus: 1. Skills

  1. Develop and extended investigation
  2. Full coverage of the assessment criteria
  3. Making connections with the work of others
  4. How to present a personal and meaningful final outcome

What we will be learning

  • In this second module of Year 12 students will undertake a full investigation based on the theme of the environment as a starting point.
  • They will learn how to reference the work of others.
  • How to structure and organise sketchbooks, boards etc.
  • Different ways of researching and investigating ideas through initial studies.
  • How to handle a range of materials, processes suitable for developing ideas and encouraged to take risks in their work.
  • Effective ways of exploring critical and contextual materials.
  • Different ways of analysing and responding to the work of others.
  • How to select and present their work.

Why is this important? Where does this link to future/past learning?

  • This project will build on the basic skills taught in the ‘close up’ project to develop their ideas further through focused investigations meeting all of the assessment criteria.
  • This will help all students as they progress through their A level Textiles studies and in particular during their A level Personal Investigation which starts after Easter in Year 12.

How will this topic be assessed? Formative and summative

  • Student’s work will be assessed through comparative judgement and rank order initially
  • Once the correct rank order is produced the work is assessed against the A level mark scheme with clear feedback provided to students around what they need to work on in order to improve so that they can reach their potential when it comes to their Personal Investigation.

What make a strong piece of work in this topic, and what can I do to stretch myself in this topic?

  • A strong piece of work in this module shows improvement and refinement in their observations and textiles responses. Risks would be taken to push the techniques and students would start to combine them and consider different materials other than fabric to stitch with. They might consider using plastic or found objects to incorporate into their work. Students would come to lessons with their own ideas in mind.
  • It also shows independent work at home and a student who is eager to learn and to get better by developing their skills through further practice.
  • A student who is eager to advance their knowledge by starting to look at the work of others to inspire them.
  • A student looking to stretch themselves should spend time looking at the work of others live by visiting exhibitions or museums.
