Topic title: Unit 6 Person-centred care

Year group: 13

When taught: September to October

What are we learning?

Topic 1: Understand personalisation in health and social care

Topic 2: Understand what is meant by a person-centred approach to care

Topic 3: Understand methods used to implement a person-centred approach

Topic 4: Know how to plan and conduct review meetings using a person-centred approach

Why is this important to know?

Personalisation had its origins in the 1990s because of campaigning by disability rights groups, but it took until 2008 for the government to fully embrace the concept. It has changed individuals’ lives as they are allowed choice and control over the support, they need to live life to the full. In this unit, learners will discover what is meant by personalisation and how the HSC sector can achieve this by adopting a person-centred approach. Learners must develop a positive, professional approach to caring that will empower and support individuals who need services to help them in their daily lives. Learners will explore how attitudes towards caring have changed and how government policies have resulted in the HSC professionals adopting a person-centred approach to care. They will be introduced to the practical tools and approaches that are used by professionals in their work.
