Isla wins Sir Martin Gilbert History Prize

Congratulations to Sixth Form student, Isla, who has been awarded 3rd prize in the Sir Martin Gilbert History Prize 2022. The aim of the competition is to encourage students to engage in historical debate, using a range of sources to support their arguments – the essay question for this year was “Debates about war are important, but not more important than the human story of those who fought in them”, discussing with reference to a conflict in the twentieth century. The competition received a high calibre of entries and Isla was commended for her excellent essay.

Mrs Wahlen, Head of History, praised Isla’s achievement and said,

“We are absolutely delighted to hear of Isla’s success in the Sir Martin Gilbert History competition. Her essay was of an excellent calibre and built on the Holocaust Educational Trust ‘Lessons from Auschwitz’ programme that she completed earlier on in the year. This really is a fantastic achievement!”

Isla, who is hoping to study History at university, said,“I was thrilled to find out I placed third in such a prestigious national competition. I’m hoping to study History at university, so this essay was extremely valuable. I thoroughly enjoyed the research process and broadening my understanding of the time period. I am very thankful to my teacher, Mrs Wahlen, who notified me of the opportunity!”

As 3rd prize winner, Isla will receive a £100 and £100 of book vouchers for The Cotswold School History Department.
