Jonty’s Hockey Success
In August, Year 11 student Jonty was asked to play in a Y1 tournament for a new invitational U16 team, Wessex Spartans. The adult teams were premier league teams and the youth sides reflected this – the premier league is the top National League in UK hockey, so there was tough competition!
The team met on the morning of the tournament and only lost one game in the first round, taking them through to the final the following weekend, where they played Surbiton. Following an extremely tense match, the team clawed back in the fourth quarter from 0-2 to 2-2 to win the game on penalties. The game was also televised!
All team members received a Y1 hockey stick for their magnificent achievement!
Jonty, who used to play for Cirencester, is now at Cheltenham and playing for their men`s first team in the West Premier Division.
In December, Jonty will play indoor hockey for Wessex Spartans in the U18 Championships at the Copper Box, Olympic Park.
He is currently taking part in Talent Academy Trials (England Hockey`s new talent system) at Oxford Hawks Hockey Club, with only 25 places and 80 boys trialling.
Good luck Jonty, we look forward to hearing how you get on!
