Maya visits the House of Lords
Year 12 student Maya, a member of the UK Youth Parliament for Cotswolds and Stroud, recently visited the House of Lords with the Bishop of Gloucester, Rt Revd Rachel Treweek – gaining knowledge about Bishop Rachel’s role and how she is active in the community.
Maya was shown around the House of Lords and the main entrance hall of the Houses of Parliament and, after meeting with Bishop Rachel, was invited to the Ash Wednesday Service in the Chapel of St Mary Undercroft. She also bumped into fellow Youth Parliament members and managed to have a quick chat with Sir Kier Starmer!
Sharing her experience, Maya recounted how she had spoken to Bishop Rachel about their roles and she had answered any questions that Maya had, including discussing Bishop Rachel’s wide commitment to the community of Gloucester and how her role impacts the Church of England. They also discussed discrimination in the workplace and talked about Maya’s experiences relating to her ethnic background. Bishop Rachel was kind enough to grant Maya private access to the House of Lords question time.
Maya is still in contact with Bishop Rachel and they hope to help each other with causes that they are both passionate about in the future.
Thank you to Maya for sharing her experience and we look forward to hearing more about your future collaborations.
