Topic title: Introducing yourself in more detail

Year group: 7

When taught: Jan / Feb / Mar

What are we learning?

  • Question formation
  • More on verb conjugation
  • How to ask & answer key questions about ourself:
    • Birthday
    • Family
    • Hobbies

Why is this important to know?

  • It allows pupils to transfer existing knowledge on verbs into other topics – a crucial skill for communication
  • Learning the interrogatives allows pupils to decode comprehension questions more easily
  • It gives pupils more confidence when meeting & getting to know German native speakers

Where does this link into our past and future learning?

  • This topic builds on the Konversation module we did before Christmas and allows pupils to reuse several of the question formations used there
  • Learning to talk about hobbies is an excellent way to access rules on German word order – a key skill to make further progress
  • In Year 8 and beyond, combining regular & irregular verbs in independent writing and speaking are crucial stepping stones to access more complex grammar
  • This topic deepens skills such as decoding new language and comparing and contrasting linguistic patterns, which are key to developing as a successful linguist

How will we be assessed on this topic?

  • The next assessment will test speaking and listening skills

What makes a strong piece of work in this topic?  What are teachers hoping to see?

  • Attention to detail in spelling and grammar
  • A willingness to decode and put forward theories on German syntax
  • An ability to understand others talking about themselves in speaking, reading and listening tasks
  • At the highest level, pupils will be able to adapt and form their own sentences, displaying awareness of the new tenses
