Topic title: Paris

Year group: 8

When taught: December to February

What are we learning?

  • Talking about what you did yesterday evening (perfect tense).
  • Paris monuments and opinions.
  • Saying what you did in Paris using the perfect tense of regular and regular verbs with ‘avoir’ and ‘être’.
  • Travel information.

Why is this important to know?

  • We learn how to use the verbs ‘avoir’ and ‘être’ as an auxiliary in the past tense.
  • The perfect tense is the next important tense to be studied and enables pupils to work at a high level.
  • It is important for us to learn about the culture of France and Paris is steeped in history and interesting facts.
  • We learn transactional language that will help with travel arrangements.

Where does this link into our past and future learning?

  • This links to recent learning on the use of present tense verbs and especially ‘avoir’ and ‘être’.
  • In Year 9 and beyond, the theme of Paris features in the personal world and neighbourhood topic so we can talk about visiting another town or city.
  • Once the present and perfect tenses are learnt, the near future can be taught to complete the essential three tenses that are needed to make progress at a higher level.

How will we be assessed on this topic?

  • The Year 8 assessment will contain reading and listening.

What makes a strong piece of work in this topic?  What are teachers hoping to see?

  • Accurate use of ‘avoir’ and ‘être’ and the past participle, and agreements where necessary with the latter, to correctly form the perfect tense.
  • Expression of a variety of opinions and justifications.
  • Inclusion of varied connectives and verbs.
  • At the highest level, pupils will include other pronouns, rather than just talk about themselves and make verbs negative.
