Year 8 students step up to Sixth Form challenges

Students in Year 8 hosted an evening of presentations in the new Aird Library, to represent their diverse interests and research skills.

The Mini-EPQ is an excellent opportunity for children in Key Stage 3, who are part of our Aspire programme, to research and present a topic of their choice. It’s on a smaller scale than the Year 12 Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), which can equate to the equivalent of half an A-level and can be useful for university applications, as it carries UCAS points.

Staff, parents and peers visited each of the stands at which students had set out their inspiring displays. Some used technology and screens to present; others had created printed materials to explain their research and findings.

Each student received a certificate with comments and praise about their project, written by peers, teachers and Headteacher, Mr Morgan, who also attended the event.

Mrs Newby, who leads the Aspire programme, said,

“Since the launch of the project at Easter everyone has worked tirelessly and independently to produce wonderful work. As always, we were completely entranced by the variety of topics and passion pupils brought to their work.

“Each child demonstrated real knowledge and expertise. We hope they will continue their interest in their various themes and that this is just the start of even greater future discovery – well done, Year 8s!”
