Sixth Form Sociology and Psychology students – Magistrate and High Sheriff talk
On Friday 31 January, Julia Hurrell (Magistrate) and Mark Hurrell (High Sheriff of Gloucestershire) volunteered their time to deliver a talk to our Sixth Form Sociology and Psychology students. Julia spoke about her role as a Magistrate and how they decide on sentencing. Students learnt that only 5% of cases go through the Crown Court, with 95% of criminal justice in the UK being served in Magistrates Courts. Mark explained that the High Sheriff is the King’s representative in Gloucestershire – it’s a voluntary role but is awarded a Royal Warrant and he works to champion the work of the 105,000 people who volunteer in this county.
Many thanks to Mark and Julia for coming in to talk to our students.
