Topic title: How are Sikh teachings on equality & service put into practice today?

Year group: 7

When taught: May-July

What are we learning?

  • In this module we will explore the beliefs of Sikhi (about God & the Gurus from the Mool Mantar)
  • We will consider what the Mool Mantar tells Sikhs about God, life and how to live and Give reasons & examples for how and why Sikhs practice equality.
  • We will explore the reasons why Sikhs believe that equality and service are important in the UK today and reflect on and evaluate equality and service in our own lives.

Why is this important to know?

  • Students tend to have little prior knowledge of Sikhi and it is therefore an important module to broaden their understanding.
  • Students will explore the creation of Sikhi and their key beliefs in equality and tolerance. They will discover how these are shown in their practices, for example the wearing of the 5 Ks. This will enable students to have a greater understanding of the importance of religious expression in society today.
  • This will enhance student knowledge and enable them to challenge misconceptions when encountering Sikhi in the news/their lives.

Where does this link into our past and future learning?

  • This module connects to previous discussions on worldviews and like the previous module, will enable students to consider how religion is formed and its purpose (in the case of Sikhi a focus on equality and respect).
  • Students will be able to connect this with their year 8 modules on Islam and Jesus, where they will also look at the origins of the religion and the impact it has on practice today.

How will we be assessed on this topic?

  • Ongoing assessment of knowledge and understanding of key terms through Satchel: one quizzes/homework/retrieval tasks in lessons.
  • Written tasks in lessons to assess knowledge and understanding.
