During the last week of term, 38 Year 8 pupils spent a week in Germany, staying in a hotel overlooking the River Rhein as a base to explore the area.

On the first day, the group travelled by train to Sankt Goar, with a visit to the town and a chance to sample some German schnitzel. A walk to Rheinfels Castle – the largest castle overlooking the Rhein – departing with the knowledge of how builders of the walls mixed animal brains and eyeballs with the mortar to ensure the bricks stuck together! This was followed by a cruise back to Boppard in time for dinner.

Day 2 involved a visit to Cochem, sampling the German cake, then a quick ride down the road to the Klotti theme park – Mrs Baron-Copley was sad that they missed the Tibetan terrier and Pygmy goat show! A historical bus tour taking in Deutsches Eck followed, then dinner and a competitive game of mini golf.

On day 3 the group visited Rüdesheim, with an opportunity for a bit of shopping in the town, as well as taking in the impressive Niederwald monument – built between 1871 and 1883 to commemorate German unification – followed by chairlift journey over the grape vines, down into the town. The evening included a trip to the  ice cream cafe to try ‘Spaghettieis’ – the ice cream that looks like Spaghetti Bolognese.

A brilliant trip had by all – the proof is in the pudding (and it looks like there was a lot of that!)

“I really enjoyed having more responsibility than I do at home, going around with my friends, learning more German and the food.” Heath (Y8)

“My favourite parts of this trip is experiencing somewhere new and one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to, spending time with friends and having a laugh.” Jemimah (Y8)
