“A comfortable and safe space for all”

Students in LGBTQ+ and Allies club, which meets every Thursday, created this extraordinary collage to mark Pride month in June.

They also held a sale of badges, stickers and wristbands, raising £182 for charity. Sales of rainbow hand fans were welcome on the hottest day of the year so far!

Members of the club produced a presentation to share in tutor sessions, about the history of Pride and the value of allies.

  • An ally is a friend, who listens, stands alongside, and does not judge.
  • An ally is not a bystander, they are open-minded and willing to learn.
  • An ally understands that no two people are the same.

Billy, who attends the club, said,

“Having an LGBTQ+ club in school, open to students of any age, is beneficial to everyone as it is a comfortable and safe space for people to ask questions and discuss personal issues, as well as problems we see in the media.

“With the struggles everyone faces growing up, magnified by the problems surrounding finding comfort in who you are and then ultimately coming out to others, I think everyone appreciates just having somewhere to speak freely.

“Organising the sale for pride month for a trans youth charity, and the Trevor project, who provide counselling for LGBTQ+ people, is not only an effort to raise money, but also to hopefully inspire some passion for reaching equal treatment for all.”
