Pedalling for power and chasing cyclones!

Year 8 and Year 10 students visited the 2022 Cheltenham Science Festival, where the theme was ‘Be the Change’.

We enjoyed exploring the activities in the Discover Zone, which included cycling to produce enough renewable energy to power a boiler, and the Arcade where students solved different codes and puzzles. Everyone enjoyed the famous cyclone, on the Spirax-Sarco stand!

Year 10 attended a STEM workshop, to help them learn about careers that link to Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Year 8 had a talk from Dr Jamie Gallagher about nanotechnology. He explained the history of nanotechnology and the scale of nanometres.

In a ‘Stardust Hunters’ workshop with Dr Sarah Roberts, she introduced us to micrometeorites, and we used a magnet, filters and microscopes to search for our own. A couple of students successfully discovered some micrometeorites! Dr Roberts collected our samples to analyse back in her lab!
