Topic title: Art with a message
Year group: 8
When taught: September – October
What are we learning?
Understanding how artists include meaning and messages in their artwork. How imagery can communicate these ideas and messages to the viewer. How specific artists, including Banksy, Barabara Kruger, Chris Ofili and Marc Quinn communicate larger ideas in their work. Understanding Stencilling technique, including positive/negative space.
Why is this important to know?
Understanding how to use imagery to communicate more complex and mature ideas is ideal to introduce in year 8 as pupils become more able to manage this content. The introduction of concept, content and an artist’s intent are fundamentals for developing pupils ability to express themselves by visual means.
Where does this link into our past and future learning?
The ability to communicate ideas and messages of personal interest will be a key part of later learning, particularly in projects during year 9 and beyond. Stencilling technique also builds upon pupils prior learning in both tone and printmaking
How will we be assessed on this topic?
Students will be assessed practically at the end of the project focusing on the skills and creativity shown in their stencil designs and in an extended placard homework.
