Back in Black Opens Jazz It Up at Cheltenham Jazz Festival
Back in Black, the school’s Jazz band, performed at Jazz it Up, part of the Cheltenham Jazz Festival, on Saturday 2nd May. This much-anticipated annual celebration of jazz music took place on the Free Stage, where a number of local secondary schools each delivered a 20-minute set across the day. The band opened proceedings this year, taking to the stage first and setting the tone for the day. Their early performance meant the audience was able to enjoy the festival atmosphere outdoors in warm sunshine, creating a vibrant and welcoming start to the event.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable occasion, and the band delivered a confident and energetic performance that was warmly received by the audience. Their set showcased both musical skill and variety, featuring well-known pieces such as Get Ready, Doxy, Norwegian Wood, Feeling Good and Zoot Suit Riot. Each piece highlighted the group’s versatility and the commitment of its members, with strong solo performances and a cohesive ensemble sound throughout.
Back in Black has been an established and much-valued part of the school’s musical life for over 20 years. The ensemble included pupils from Year 7 through to Sixth Form, alongside several members of staff, creating a collaborative and supportive environment for musicians of all ages and experience levels. The band rehearsed weekly on Thursday afternoons and maintained a busy schedule, performing at a range of festivals during the summer months in addition to school concerts and events throughout the year.
This year marked the final performances for several Year 13 members, who had made a significant contribution to the band during their time at The Cotswold School. Their dedication, leadership and musicianship had played an important role in the continued success of the ensemble. As they prepared to move on to the next stage of their journeys, the school extended its sincere thanks and best wishes for the future.
